Everybody loves fall portraits. The rich colors, the warm sweaters, and the cozy posing signifies the end of summer, the school year starting, and the beginning of the holiday season.
While we’d love the golden hour of every autumn afternoon to be a perfect 68° with fluffy clouds and a brilliant sunset, outdoor portraits aren’t always this idyllic.
Weather, wind, bugs, and branches, can all impact your fall family portrait session. However, preparing for the elements can help your session go smoother and make it a great experience.
Here, a 5 tips for making sure your family's fall photo session turns out great.
1. Outdoor portraits require outdoor clothing. Delicate fabrics that get easily snagged, cute boots that might get scuffed, and light colors that show the first sign of dirt may want to stay back home in the closet.
2. Be prepared for that outdoorsy experience. It’s not unusual to brush up against some thing that will cause debris to cling to your clothing. While wet leaves, moss, and burs are not the end of the world, but understand that your fall portrait session might mean you’re taking home a little bit of mother nature.
3. While scheduling sessions we try to avoid the wind in the rain. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t just rain, or it might be a little windy. To keep flyway hairs at bay be sure to use and bring along hair grooming items and products. Even fall can be a little humid, so realize that the outdoor elements may affect hairstyles and even make up. Don’t be afraid to stop the session for some touchups.
4. Mother Nature‘s little friends are everywhere and depending on your session location we might come across, spiders, beetles, mosquitoes, ants or bigger friends like squirrels, bunnies, geese, and possibly deer. It’s important to be quiet and respectful with in the forest preserve. We also want to be mindful if any family members maybe adverse to these kinds of interactions. If nature’s wild side gives anyone in your family the willies, we can accommodate to more landscaped park where critter encounters are less frequent.
5. The weather worry. Don’t fret about the clouds! Cloud cover makes for rich fall colors. Sunshine is great too, but there is no reason to reschedule a photo session just because we’ve got fluffy things in the sky.
It’s also important to realize that generalized weather reports that issue a percent chance of rain may not apply to the more specific location of your session. Multiple apps are used to track showers and helped predict when sessions need to be rescheduled. On occasion, there may be an opportunity to wait out a small rainstorm or move one town over to avoid getting wet. Flexibility is key!
Getting a handle on some of this outdoor planning will help your family enjoy their fall photo session and make it a little less stressful for you. Of course, if you have any additional questions or would like to schedule a consultation in person or via zoom prior to your session, please reach out!
Happy Fall!
